Multi-Alarm Fire With Maydays and 137 RIT Activation
March 26, 2016
Today, just past 1400 hours, units were dispatched to the 4600 block of Allegheny River Blvd in Penn Hills for reports of smoke coming from a business. 137 Rescue immediately marked en route with a full crew for the RIT. EMS and Police arrived on scene reporting a working fire.
137 Rescue crews, complimented quickly by 137 Engine and Squad crews, set up RIT operations. Fire conditions rapidly deteriorated and an evacuation was called. After multiple crews were unable to be located, a Mayday was called by command and 137 RIT was activated. 137 RIT crews immediately entered the building and completed a search of the first division and basement, assisting 7 firefighters safely out of the structure.
Once the mayday was confirmed clear, units began exterior operations. 137 Engine took part in a massive tanker operation due to poor water pressure, pumping multiple lines and other apparatus. 1 Edgewood firefighter on the initial RIT team was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion as a precaution and has since been released.
