4-Alarm Apartment Fire in Swissvale
Tonight, just before 1900, units were dispatched to the corner of Melrose/Woodstock in neighboring Swissvale Borough for a reported apartment on fire. 137 Engine immediately marked en route with a full interior crew, reporting a 3-story multi-family dwelling with fire from the roof line. 278 Truck arrived on scene and immediately began exterior operations as 137 Engine laid-in.
Over the next couple minutes, Edgewood firefighters attacked the fire from the exterior with master streams as command called a 2nd, 3rd, and eventually, 4th alarm. Edgewood crews quickly deployed a high-rise pack into side Bravo and upon locating the fire were immediately evacuated due to worsening conditions and subsequent partial collapse.
Firefighters tried to extinguish the flames for 4 fours, fighting against a strong wind and pouring rain. Eventually, master streams were able to control the fire, but due to heavy collapse conditions, the building had to be demolished. One Edgewood firefighter suffered a facial laceration during initial operations as a piece of sharp siding fell onto him from above; he was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, quickly discharged, and returned to the scene to continue the efforts. Another Edgewood firefighter was assessed on scene by EMS for smoke inhalation and remained to operate.
The fire is under investigation and 49 people were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
