Two-Alarm House Fire in Swissvale with Mayday
Today, around 1530, Edgewood was alerted for a reported residential structure fire in the neighboring borough of Swissvale. 137 Engine immediately responded with 5 firefighters, followed closely by 137 Rescue. 278 Chief arrived on scene reporting light smoke coming from the structure, calling for a second alarm for the working fire.
137 and 278 crews made entry to find heavy smoke inside the structure. The hidden fire inside the walls quickly grew to flashover conditions, causing crews to evacuate and a Mayday to be called. The Mayday was quickly cleared by RIT crews and exterior operations began to control the now fully-involved fire.
It took crews nearly 2 hours to get the fire under control. During the incident, 3 EVFD firefighters were transported to nearby hospitals for heat exhaustion in the 90 degree weather. They were released a short time later and have no lasting injuries.
