Two-Alarm House Fire in Churchill

Just before 0900 yesterday, units were dispatched for a reported residential structure fire with possible entrapment. Callers knew that there was a man inside, and immediately after calling 911 alerted the homeowner to the flames seen in the rear of the structure, potentially saving his life.

137 Rescue, dispatched for the RIT team, immediately marked en route with 4 interior firefighters, becoming the first truck on the road. While on the road in heavy snow and traffic conditions, 122 Chief received reports from PD on scene confirming heavy fire and called for a second alarm. 122 Chief also decided to assign 137 to Search and Rescue instead of RIT.

137 Rescue arrived on scene and immediately went to work with 122 crews who had just arrived on scene. PD reported all occupants were out, so crews went interior to immediately attempt a knock on the fire. Frigid conditions led to frozen hydrants, so water issues led to multiple evacuations of the structure. Fire ran from the rear of the structure throughout the roofline, collapsing nearly the entire roof. 122 Engine had to use a foam line to fully extinguish the fire. It took approximately an hour and a half to get the fire under control.

According to investigators, the fire is believed to have started in an addition on the rear, but are still investigating. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with shortness of breath.
