Two-Alarm Fatal Fire in Penn Hills

Crews were alerted around 0530 for a residential structure fire with possible entrapment in the 7000 block of Thon Drive in the 221 district of Penn Hills. 137 Rescue was first on the road, marking en route with 4 interior firefighters for Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations. 225 Truck arrived on scene and established command, placing a line in service to combat the heavy fire found. 137 Rescue arrived on scene as the second piece and was ordered to perform a primary search of the first floor. Command called for a second RIT team to replace 137. Shortly thereafter, interior crews reported a partial collapse of the second floor. Due to deadly fire and hoarding conditions, 137 crews were unable to complete the primary search and were forced to back out. Operations were taken exterior after crews were forced to evacuate the structure. Crews later located a deceased elderly female on the first floor. The fire is under investigation by the Penn Hills Fire Marshal. It is believed the fire started in the kitchen on the first floor. 1st Alarm: 221, 225, 222, 227, 137 RIT 2nd Alarm: 192, 196 RIT, PHFM http://www.wtae.com/news/at-least-one-dead-in-penn-hills-house-fire/30397282
